When you're making your choices, choose a shade that's about three-quarters the height of the base for a proportionate look. As for choosing color, just about anything goes (as long as you like it!). Choose complementary colors to highlight or echo certain aspects of the room (bringing out a color in the rug, for instance); contrasting colors for a stronger statement; or a neutral color that gains personality from a bold pattern or texture.
