Variopinte Enameled Steel Dinner Plate

"It's like a recipe, like adding spices, a bit of green, a bit of red and yellow, then heat it all up, and it's magic," says Stefania di Petrillo of the process of making her handcrafted Variopinte Dinnerware (2009). In Italian, variopinte means multicolored, but to di Petrillo it refers to the idea of the same object realized in various colors. "People don't realize that with enamel you can achieve more colors than Pantone® and it is completely natural," she says. The vibrant hues are created by crushing natural pigments that are mixed in with glass powder and applying it by hand to metal through a firing process. No two firings are exactly the same, giving each piece a unique, one of a kind appearance, and depending on where the piece was suspended during firing, markings may be visible. The enamel is nontoxic. Pack the Variopinte Collection in your picnic basket, since it's durable enough to use outdoors. Dishwasher safe. Made in France.

Pressed Willow Tray

Although the 42-year-old Corin Mellor has been creative director of the Mellor brand since his father's retirement in 2005, it is certainly a labor of love. “You shouldn't have to completely divide your time between work and pleasure,” he says. “Your work should be your pleasure.” A sophisticated version of those found at a British canteen (or cafeteria), the Willow Trays (2009) are beautifully made in plywood molded from willow veneers. These stackable trays are light but durable and practical with a curvy rim and hand finished with a silky smooth melamine surface. The base is stamped David Mellor Design.

Small and Deep Salad Bowl

Parisian designers Catherine Lévy and Sigolène Prébois of Tsé & Tsé Associées take a simple approach to design: “We design things that we ourselves want to use,” says Lévy. “First we live with it, and if after that we don't like it, we don't produce it.” But there's nothing simplistic about their work. The Hungry Tableware Collection (1995/2006), which includes bowls, cups and salad forks, has asymmetrical shapes and a cheeky character that will surely inspire engaging dinner parties and garden gatherings. They first tried to have the pieces manufactured in Limoges only to be deterred producing a non-round bowl was too absurd for the established manufacturers. Now handmade, the bowls and forks are sophisticated yet fun. The international success that the duo enjoys hasn't changed their D.I.Y. attitude, though: “When we look at where we are and think that we have managed to make a living doing what we love,” says Lévy, “we still think it's a miracle.” Dishwasher safe. Made in France/Romania.

Menu Carving & Serving Set

For serving hot or cold delicacies, our Carving and Serving Set (2009) combines porcelain, bamboo, melamine and a cooling gel pack to create a very versatile product. The bamboo cutting board, which naturally resists bacteria, can be nested into the melamine tray for serving meat, cheeses or any tasty platter. The silicone cooling gel pack can emerge from the freezer and be placed between the melamine tray and the porcelain piece to present oysters, sushi or other cold delicacies. This Red Dot Design Award-winning set was designed by Copenhagen-based Kasper Rønn and Jonas Bjerre-Poulsen of Norm Architects to have “a classic recognizable shape that calls for attention.” Your guests will notice.
Tiffin Lunch Box Set

The term “tiffin” is used in parts of Britain and India to mean a light meal or snack. In some areas, the word specifically refers to lunches brought to work or school. A common approach in India is to put rice in one tiffin box, dal in another, breads or naan in a third and so on. A smart solution for storing and carrying different food types, both dry and wet, the Tiffin Lunch Box Set is a convenient tool you'll turn to again and again. The set includes three stacks of stainless steel containers that lock together for easy carrying. The large stack has three plates and four containers; the medium stack has two plates and three containers; and the small stack has one plate and two containers. Made in India.
