Eames® Aluminum Ottoman with Powder-Coated Frame

When Charles and Ray Eames designed the Eames Aluminum Group (1958), they created a revolution in seating that has lost none of its edge. The collection was originally developed as a special project for a private residence being designed by Eero Saarinen and Alexander Girard. Moving away from the Eameses' shell forms of the 1940s and exploring newly affordable aluminum, the designers constructed a lightweight, corrosion-resistant and die-cast frame. They wrapped the frame in a sling - a "sitting pocket" that subtly conforms to the body's shape - and gave it a wide seat for leisurely sitting. The Ottoman is set on a four-point base and complements any chair in the Aluminum Group. It also can be used as compact additional seating when needed.
Herman Miller SelectTM Nelson Tray Table

George Nelson was the director of design at Herman Miller, Inc. from 1946 to 1972. His influence over those three decades is what made Herman Miller what it is today. Not only did Nelson recruit Charles and Ray Eames and Isamu Noguchi, but he also created a portfolio of work without which the history of modern design would be incomplete. To honor this legacy, Michigan-based Herman Miller has reissued Nelson's 1961 molded-top Tray Table (1961/2011) with a special design inspired by Nelson's Flock of Butterflies clock. Forming the sunburst are hand-selected veneers of walnut and santos palisander wood inlaid into white ash. Simple assembly is required for the Tray Table. Made in U.S.A.

This limited-edition collection will be produced only until February 2012.

A separate Tray with this same design is also available.

Herman Miller Eames® Executive Chair in Messenger Fabric

Also known as the Time-Life Chair, this iconic piece was originally created for the executive floors of New York City's Time-Life Building in 1960. How those lucky executives were able to get an Eames chair designed just for them began with the Time-Life Chairman, Henry Luce. In 1959, Charles Eames asked Luce for photographs from the Time-Life archive to be used in a slideshow he was creating for the U.S. pavilion at the Moscow World Exhibition. Luce agreed, as long as Eames promised to return the favor one day. In 1960, Eames made good on that promise, and 50 years later, the world is still enjoying the results of that arrangement. This chair is an authentic, fully licensed product of Herman Miller®, Inc. Eames is a licensed trademark of Herman Miller. Made in U.S.A.

Herman Miller SAYL Task Chair

“I knew that creating a work chair is one of design's greatest challenges, an intimidating project in every possible way,” says Swiss designer Yves Béhar. “There is no place to hide in a chair. Every part serves a structural or tactile purpose.” Béhar didn't have to look far from his adopted home of San Francisco for the inspiration of his Sayl Chair (2010). The geometry of the suspension system on the Golden Gate Bridge can be seen in the airiness of the Sayl's signature back. The name reflects the sailboats that pass beneath the famous bridge, and replacing the "i" in "sail" with a "y" is a nod to the chair's innovative Y-TowerTM structure. Low cost but high minded, the Sayl was almost three years in the making and has achieved the prestigious Cradle-to-Cradle Silver certification. Although 90% recyclable, the Sayl is no throw-away: It comes with a 12-year warranty and is shipped as two pieces in a single box half the chair's size for minimal transportation impact. To assemble, simply lock the chair into the base no tools required. Made in U.S.A.

Herman Miller NelsonTM Platform Bench - Metal Leg

George Nelson's Platform Bench (1946) is one of the great icons of mid-century modernism. For Herman Miller's influential design director, utility was as important as beauty, and his spare rectangular bench is the result of this belief. It serves equally well as table, platform base or seating, depending on need and situation. No wonder it's been called timeless; something this functional never dates. The chrome legs have a slender profile; also available with wood legs. The optional Bench Cushion is upholstered in felt to add comfort and color to this iconic piece. This original is an authentic, fully licensed product of Herman Miller. Made in U.S.A.

Goetz sofa by herman miller

Molded plywood carries an immediate association with classic Herman Miller designs, and Mark Goetz skillfully and creatively incorporates this material in his sofa design. While traditional construction consists of a wooden frame with padding and upholstery applied over it, the Goetz sofa turns tradition inside out, wrapping his sofa in a striking molded wood veneer shell to create both a structural frame and a dramatic profile. Crisp, clean lines and ergonomic support—an instant Herman Miller classic.

Understanding that people don't just perch on the edge of sofa seat cushions, designer Mark Goetz made sure that his sofa would be comfortable, no matter what position you were in. Thick cushions and a balanced seat depth—shallow enough to give correct support while sitting upright; deep enough to provide enough room for napping—provide both correct ergonomic support and comfort.

To achieve the right look for the wood veneer shell, an intricate miter is incorporated at every corner, allowing the molded veneer to wrap completely around the sides and back. There is only one seam on the entire shell. The shell is available in several beautiful wood veneers—ash, ebonized ash, walnut, and cherry. The upholstery—which meets the veneer at a subtle, understated edge—can be leather or one of many fabric choices. The matte finish to the metal legs adds contemporary appeal.

Nelson swag leg rectangular dining table by herman miller

The classic Nelson swag leg table has a clean, simple look that's a fresh today as when George Nelson designed it 50 years ago.

The rectangular table has solid walnut stretcher with either a walnut veneer top or white laminate top with a walnut edge. The chromed legs feature adjustable glides.

George Nelson began with the legs, insisting that they be made of metal, machine formed, and prefinished. And beautiful. He wanted that graceful curve. He also wanted them to be easy for the consumer to assemble, so the desk and tables could be shipped knocked down to save on costs.

This series of furniture is named for the process that creates the distinctive legs. George Nelson started with this idea: "Wouldn't it be beautiful to have some kind of sculptured leg on a piece of furniture?" How could that be done without wood and hand-carving tools? Using pressure to taper and curve a metal tube--the process called swaging--proved to be the best way to produce the legs.

Eames molded plastic rocker by herman miller

What could be more charming than an Eames molded plastic rocker? Perfect for a protected porch or baby's room.

These molded plastic armchairs by Charles and Ray Eames were the first industrially manufactured plastic chairs. Their clean, simple forms cradle the body. Today's chairs are authentic original design with updated, eco-friendly materials and manufacturing and a large selection of base, shell, and color combinations. Set atop what’s commonly referred to as the Eames Eiffel base, this Rocker has maple runners.

Charles and Ray Eames believed that comfort was as important as looks. The molded plastic chairs have comfort built in. The shell seats have high, flexible backs, deep seat pockets, and waterfall front edges so you can sit comfortably even for extended periods.

Eames walnut stool by herman miller

Are they really stools? Places to sit? Are they tables? Plant stands? Accent pieces for homes, offices, lobbies? Yes. They've been called abstract chess pieces. Well, no. Made of solid walnut, these stools designed by Charles and Ray Eames can be used anywhere, alone or in groups, and are beautifully versatile.

The center section of the Eames walnut stool is done in three distinctively shaped profiles. Choose the one you like, or choose two or three - the same or different. Each stool is made of turned walnut; pick it up - you can tell instantly that it's solid wood. You can turn the stools over. Both surfaces are concave.

At the time it was built in 1959, the Time-Life Building was the largest slab-formed skyscraper in New York. It was a modern marvel, featuring an ultra-modern lobby with murals by Joseph Albers and Fritz Glarner. In 1960, Ray Eames was asked to design occasional pieces for that lobby to accompany chairs designed by her husband, Charles.

Trained as a sculptor, Eames created the walnut stools, which became her favorite seats and were scattered all over the Pacific Palisades home she shared with Charles.

Herman miller nelson swag leg desk

The classic Nelson swag leg desk has the look, scale, and function just right for today, 50 years after George Nelson designed them. The size of the desk is perfect for a laptop and ipod dock and makes efficient use of space in your home or office.

The desk is has solid walnut sides, back and stretcher with a white laminate top. A grommet for cable management has been added to the back of the desk. Colorful cubbyholes at the back keep materials organized and at hand, and one fits a laptop computer. Two molded plastic drawers store small items. Shipped knocked down.

George Nelson began with the legs, insisting that they be made of metal, machine formed, and prefinished. And beautiful. He wanted that graceful curve. He also wanted them to be easy for the consumer to assemble, so the desk and tables could be shipped knocked down to save on costs.

Using pressure to taper and curve a metal tube--the process called swaging--proved to be the best way to produce the legs. Inserting a screw in the legs and rotating them in opposite directions makes quick work of assembly--and makes a strong joint too.
