Algue

Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec have worked together as joint partners at their own design firm since 1999 and have been collaborating with Vitra since 2000. With work ranging from architectural projects to furniture, tableware, and home accessory design, the primary focus of the brothers' work is dedicated to the design and organization of interior spaces. Following this framework they created Algues (2004), an unconventional design that functions both as a decorative element and interior architecture and is modeled after plant life. The plastic Algues link together to create web-like textures, ranging from light curtains to thick, opaque partitions that act as room dividers. Twenty-five Algues yield one square yard of mesh. Algues are supplied in packs of 25 and are available in Light Green, Green, White, Black, Red, Pink and Transparent. Made in Germany.

Nelson Night Clock

Designed in the 1940s and '50s, George Nelson's table clocks were highly successful both as popular consumer products and icons of high design. His Night Clock (1948), with its solid brass frame and convex acrylic dome, remains as compelling today as it was half a century ago and is a refreshing alternative to the usual timekeepers. The Night Clock is diligently reproduced by Vitra Design Museum. Powered by one AA battery (included). Made in Germany.

Nos Da Pillow

Scottish designer Donna Wilson is well known in the UK for her quirky knitted home accessories. To her, knitting “means I have complete control over the fabric I create, color, pattern and texture as I am making a fabric from a piece of yarn,” she says. “I still find this amazing.” Perfectly patterned in delightful color combinations, Wilson's Nos Da Throw and Pillow (2009), which are named for a Welsh phrase meaning “good night,” are a modern take on traditional English double cloth. This special textile doesn't have a post-weaving wash, making it durable and hard wearing. The wool is spun in a Yorkshire mill to create the required thick yarn, and then woven at a 100-year-old mill in Wales. The method allows for Nos Da's complex patterns and surface textures. Made in England.

Filigree Tree

A graduate of the Aarhus School of Architecture, Trine Find is a Danish designer who begins every project with a hand-drawn sketch and follows the motto "keep it simple," which is not surprising when you see her Filigree Tree (2008). A truly minimal holiday tree, the Filigree Tree, or "Filigrantrae" in Danish, is easy to assemble and disassemble without any tools simply slide the branches through the holes in the trunk. In addition to being a holiday tree, the Filigree Tree can be used to display hanging objects or jewelry or ties (the possibilities are endless) all year long. When Find first designed the Filigree Tree, she would make each one herself, often filling the last orders on Christmas Eve. In 2010, she moved production to the U.S., and the Tree is now made by a small company in Connecticut. Crafted of unfinished solid American birch, the Tree measures 60" tall when assembled. A cotton drawstring bag is included for storage. Made in U.S.A.

Flag Halyard Chair

As the designer of more than 400 chairs (including the Wishbone and Shell chairs), Danish designer Hans Wegner was taking a well-earned vacation by the sea when he had the idea for his Flag Halyard Chair (1950). Sitting on the beach, Wegner noticed how comfortably his back and arms were positioned in the indent he'd made in the sand. Upon returning to his studio, he was determined to recreate that experience in a chair. The result is the Flag Halyard. Today, the third-generation family business PP Møbler produces this chair to Wegner's exacting specifications. It takes a craftsperson an entire day to string the chair, which is wrapped with a single uncut 240-meter piece of flag line, designed to resist unnecessary stretching over time. The luxurious long-haired sheepskin is extremely soft, sourced from humanely managed farms in Iceland, Greenland and the Faroe Islands. Made in Denmark.

Hex Collection

Born in Tunisia and raised in England, Tom Dixon's reputation frequently precedes him. His mystique as a bad boy Dixon dropped out of art school following a motorcycle accident and spent time in his 20s playing bass with a rock band and organizing warehouse parties is nearly as recognized as his unmistakable gift for design and emergence as one of England's most influential designers. We met with Dixon in Milan last April and he shared that he employs a test-lab approach to the objects he designs. "Designers who sit behind computers are divorced from the realities of manufacturing, selling and using furniture and household objects." To create the Hex Collection (2011), the solid copper pieces are hand formed with a hammered hexagonal pattern and a beaten finish. To maintain their luster, they are sealed with a food-safe clear lacquer. Made in India.

Alma Allen Walnut Burl Bowl

Based in Joshua Tree, California, Alma Allen has a stone and wood carving studio, as well as his own bronze foundry, where he created a forge using refractory cement and an old vacuum cleaner canister. He also designed and built his own environmentally friendly house. When it comes to his sculptures and bowls, Allen prefers to collect the materials himself and primarily uses stone and wood. To create his hand-carved Walnut Burl Bowl (2011), he chose orchard-salvaged claro walnut burl, one of the most prized and rare wood varieties. Allen keeps it chunky and solid, with the earthiness and heart of the wood intact, resulting in a bowl that begs to be held, not just admired from a distance. These are handmade items; no two pieces are exactly the same. Inconsistencies in size, finish and color are to be expected. Limited to a series of 250. Made in U.S.A.

Mohair Blanket in Barnowl

Wrap yourself in this luxuriously soft Mohair Blanket and you'll understand why mohair, which is made from the hair of the Angora goat, has been prized since the 1500s. As warm as a hug, the high-quality mohair fibers are naturally durable and breathable. Mohair's inherent strength and flexibility has led to its use in a wide range of applications since Angora goats were brought to the West in the mid-1800s from blankets and scarves to train seats and cowboy's chaps. Using all-natural vegetable dyes and only natural fibers, our 100% brushed Mohair Blanket was woven at a mill in County Wicklow, Ireland, which has been manufacturing tweeds and blankets since 1723. Made in Ireland. DWR Exclusive

Belle Jewelry Holder

Architects Mårten Claesson, Eero Koivisto and Ola Rune founded their Stockholm-based office in 1995, and in 2004 they became the first Swedish architects ever to exhibit in the international section of the Venice Architecture Biennale. To create their Belle Jewelry Holder (2005), the trio paired up with Swedish brass foundry Skultuna, which has been producing brass objects for more than 400 years and was created by King Charles IX (aka Carl) in 1607 as a way to increase Sweden's export business. The solid-brass jewelry holder has a ring-holding lid, felt-lined interior and weighted base that creates a playful rocking motion. Its polished brass surface will tarnish and develop a beautiful patina with use and time. Made in Sweden.

Tablet Portfolio

A retired hairstylist, Kenton Sorenson began making leather bags 20 years ago as a hobby. He credits his Scandinavian roots for giving him an appreciation for minimalistic shapes, naturally dyed leather and handmade construction. His Tablet Portfolio (2010) is made of six-ounce leather that is tanned the old-fashioned way, using only plant materials in the six-month tanning process. With use and time, this leather will soften and become darker in color. The corners are neatly finished with a rounded profile, and the edges are hand stitched with durable nylon thread. In place of a buckle or snap, Sorenson added a long leather strap that wraps around the Portfolio and then pulls through a loop to securely close the flap. Fits iPad, iPad2, and similarly sized readers. Tablet not included. Made in U.S.A.

Volcanic Pod

Artist Josh Herman has trained extensively in Hakomi therapy, a present-centered psychotherapy grounded in the principles of Taoism. Early in his career, he lived in both the U.S. and Japan, and studied with Paul Soldner, the inventor of American-style Raku. Approaching the objects he creates from the Eastern principle of mindfulness, Herman's work evokes unconscious abstractions mixed with the organic beauty of nature. Handmade in California using all organic materials, this sculptural Pod (2003) is made with a volcanic glaze that is proprietary to Herman. His mastery of this unique glaze, combined with his passion for mid-century modern design, has resulted in a unique quality and style of work rarely seen in ceramics over the last several decades.
Foldable Star Sculptures

John Kostick's Foldable Stars (1965) began as models of mathematical concepts, particularly the structural-relationship principle known as tensegrity (or tensional integrity). "The abstract lines that define geometric forms are indicated by actual physical parts that interact synergetically," says the designer. "Thus symmetry and structural integrity are the results of the assemblage of simple linear components, tension and compression, push and pull." Kostick refers to his Stars as "mathematical truths that you can hold in your hand," and after you pick one up, you'll have a hard time putting it down. They can be hung or placed on display, but they invite interaction, and they are fun to play with. Handcrafted in Massachusetts, these multi-axis Foldable Stars are made of bronze that will patina beautifully over time. Kostick was granted a patent for his Stars in 1970. Made in U.S.A.

Tina Frey was born in Hong Kong, grew up in Canada and lived in New York before settling in San Francisco, where she founded her studio and continues to work today. Her travels inspire her work, which draws upon memories of objects she's seen and used around the world. "All my life, from my earliest years, I was always drawing, sculpting and creating," says the designer. Her food-safe Tray Set (2008) includes one small square tray, a deep rectangle tray and a large platter. Each tray is cast by hand in small batches, using durable, shatterproof resin. Slight variations between batches contribute to the beauty of the collection and the uniqueness of each piece. Made in U.S.A.

Ernest Pouf

The Ernest Pouf (2011) by Donna Wilson is characteristic of the designer's playful nature, tactile aesthetic and timeless palette. Seeking a fun response to the problem of occasional seating, she designed the low-lying Pouf to bring a little softness, intimacy and color into the home. To make each Ernest Pouf, the cotton liner is hand-stuffed with an eco-friendly fiber made from recycled plastic bottles and then upholstered with knit panels, like segments of an orange. These zig-zag patterned lambswool panels are knit in Scotland using a traditional Fair Isle technique, and the comfortable Pouf is assembled by hand in Wilson's U.K. studio. The wool cover is removable for cleaning. Made in England.

Nelson's series of Ceramic Clocks were developed in the early 50's, although for unknown reasons, they never made it past the production stage. the Vitra Design Museum is now, for the first time ever, bringing these original quartz movement clocks to the market, based on the original plans and prototypes. The clock cases is made entirely of glazed porcelain; the clean, minimal design of the clock face attests to its function. Battery included. Made in Germany

Basso Bottle Coaster

Architects Mårten Claesson, Eero Koivisto and Ola Rune founded their Stockholm-based office in 1995, and in 2004 they became the first Swedish architects ever to exhibit in the international section of the Venice Architecture Biennale. To create the Basso Bottle Coaster (2005), they paired up with Skultuna, a Swedish Brass Foundry that has been producing brass objects for more than 400 years in the very same place in Skultuna, Sweden. The Coaster is self-centering thanks to its slight convex dimple, and its polished brass surface will tarnish and develop a beautiful patina with use and time. Arrives in an elegant gift box. Made in Sweden.
